Consumer confidence ups and downs

By Maureen Aylward

Recently released reports in the US show that consumer confidence is up; however, there are still drags on the economy. We asked our Zintro experts to comment on how these reports help or hinder consumer confidence, their effect on business, and what is behind the numbers.

Jose Poncela, an economist, says that consumer confidence indexes are leading indicators on how the economy will behave in the near future. Consumer indicators are widely used by companies, banks and policy makers but they are used with more care during a crisis than in normal times. In times of high risk aversion, leading indicators perform poorer than in economically stable times.

“If consumer confidence is high, families are confident in the future and will increase spending. Precautionary savings will diminish and consumption will increase, especially for cars, homes, and consumer durables,” Poncela explains. “Companies often react by first trying to sell their stocks, then they increase the number of hours worked by current personnel and, only after that, if sales remain high, they hire new workers and increase capacity through investments.”

Poncela says that consumer confidence is an economic signal that helps to build confidence by telling consumers, businesses, and the population in general how the economy will behave a few months from now. “Expectations are important and have a self fulfilling prophecy component. However, consumer confidence indexes have their limitations,” he says. “Events can change a family’s perception of the state of the economy and consumption won’t materialize as previewed.”

Poncela says that changes smaller than five percent in consumer confidence indexes are usually discarded as irrelevant. “During a crisis, as the one we are in currently, the economy is too volatile and companies trust less than in normal times. Companies need to see that these indicators are confirmed to make a decision. In the end, the indicators become less accurate forecasters of the future evolution of the economy,” he says.

Susan Zweibaum, an integrated marketing and communications expert, says that consumer products such as food, health and beauty, and household cleaning items are less affected by the levels of consumer confidence because they are necessities. “With these products, consumer confidence reports do not have much of an impact on manufacturing other than to understand how best to market to the consumer,” she says. “In a bad economy, when consumer confidence is down, we tend to see an uptick in things such as coupons and rebate offers and usage and an increase in private label purchases.”
Companies that manufacture more luxury goods or durables such as cars and appliances are going to be more affected by the consumer confidence levels because the consumer is apt to spend if he or she feels things are getting better, says Zweibaum. “The reports give manufacturers some indication as to why they may be seeing ups and downs in sales and can give direction as to how best advertise and provide special offers.,” she says. “However, ultimately, businesses are focused on what their sales are, what their retailers want, and how to incentivize their customers to purchase. An economic indicator, whether positive or negative, will not help them do that.”

Dr. Szabolcs Nagy, a marketing professor, says that consumer confidence always reflects expectations for the future. “It is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. It can either help or hinder businesses; however, consumer confidence feeds from many sources including ones that businesses can influence,” he says. “Social media helps to change consumer expectations as our preconceptions have a serious impact on how we evaluate the same performance. Broadcast, printed, or electronic optimism in business helps to avoid the downward spiral effect.”

Thoughts on measuring well being

By Maureen Aylward

We know about the GDP of countries, but what about measuring well being? Countries like France and Bhutan have looked into measuring the well being and happiness of those countries as well as the economic impact. We asked Zintro experts about their thoughts on measuring well being.

Camille Tuason Mata, an urban planning consultant, says that since the 1970s, international government organizations (i.e. the United Nations) have incorporated the Quality of Life Index into measuring the well-being of countries. “The Quality of Life Index, or QLI, measures a series of indicators related to the factors that speak about one’s quality of life. These indicators include mortality rate, malnourishment, income, poverty, political freedom, along with a number of other indicators affecting how well households and individuals live,” says Mata. “There are as many as 100 QLI indicators that measure well being across various domains. With each organization, these indicators vary somewhat, but overall are fairly consistent across the board.”

Rene Novotny, an expert in accounting and finance, says that it is a good idea to adopt measures other than the GDP as a measure of prosperity. “GDP does not capture general level of people’s happiness in a society, particularly in a society focused solely on money as the most admired form of achievement,” he says. “It can be shown that people in developing nations are living happier lives than those in rich Western countries because their lives are not evolving around making money and keeping up with mortgages and credit card payments.”

Arthur Jefford, an expert in international sales and marketing, says that well being measurement is best defined by an individual’s functioning ability to maximize capabilities in his or her personally chosen fields of interest that results in a feeling of self-actualization and overall sense of satisfaction. “Individual power of the people pushing from the bottom up for better living will ultimately change the top elite acceptance standard of the measurement of success from GDP and maximized profits to overall well being in living and working environments as the measurement of ultimate success,” says Jefford. “Well being should be the ultimate goal of individual family units, business and organization units, regions, nations, and all the world’s peoples.”

“It’s a win-win for all parties, thanks to Zintro”, Rick Backus

Rick Backus, a business technology consultant has over 25 years of consulting, IT and office equipment industry experience.  Formerly Rick had an 8 year partnership with MMI Consulting, Norfolk, VA where he provided complete solutions and advised on optimal network support practices. His specializations include implementation, management, and support of network infrastructure, application, web, data, document and process automation solutions.

Recently Rick received a Zintro inquiry from a software company in the western US who had a website security access issue. Although another (non-Zintro) consultant had previously helped to resolved the problem, that consultant had not properly documented the solution. Unfortunately for the client, the problem arose again. Rick, with vast knowledge in this area was able to quickly resolve the issue and provide the client with adequate documentation (including screen-shots) on how he reconfigured their web server to permanently eliminate the problem. “It was a win-win for all parties thanks to Zintro . Zintro provides exposure for my consulting practice to a global client-base I otherwise would not be able to reach.”says Rick Backus.

Older entrepreneurs fill conceptual worker niche

By Maureen Aylward

Recent studies have shown that people over the age of 50 are the fastest growing area of entrepreneurism. Experience is one contributing success factor. Our Zintro experts were eager to share their ideas and reasoning for this growth and success.

Benno Duenkelsbuehler, a consumer business builder, thinks that older entrepreneurs are filling a need in the market place. “As a business builder, I have learned that business leaders need a conceptual worker, a person who not only possesses the skills to accomplish a task, but understands the relevance of that task to the larger vision of the enterprise,” he says. “The movement in organizational structure from information workers (skill set) to conceptual workers (mindset) allows organizations to hire fewer workers at a higher level, and older entrepreneurs are often better equipped to contribute at a high level of innovation that is reflected in bottom line results.”

Harry Rivkin, an expert in entrepreneurial management, says that Corporate America has been especially unfriendly to the 50-somethings (or older) within its ranks. “Many find themselves still needing income but with very limited opportunities for continued employment despite the wealth of knowledge, experience, and general business acumen acquired over the years,” says Rivkin. “In response, many older workers finally pursue a dream they’ve had for many years to open a bookstore, coffee shop, or restaurant. Many others will incorporate themselves as consultant or contractor as an avenue of producing income and remaining productive. Perhaps this trend is borne more out of economic and spiritual necessity than out of an articulated goal of becoming an entrepreneur.”

RSBZ, a turnaround specialist and entrepreneur, thinks that many older entrepreneurs have always been entrepreneurs, no matter what the environment. “We are driven, creative, resourceful and tenacious. I guess we can now add experienced to the list of adjectives,” he explains. “We have to be optimistic, but perhaps now tinged with a hint of pragmatism. However, no matter how you slice it, our creative juices are still flowing, and we can leverage some of our past experiences in ways that may still elude our younger ranks.” RSBZ says that older entrepreneurs are driven by the immutable belief that they have found the better mouse trap or the next solution to a problem no one had articulated before.

Older entrepreneurs are seeking meaningful work

By Maureen Aylward

Recent studies have shown that people over the age of 50 are the fastest growing area of entrepreneurism. Experience is one contributing success factor. Our Zintro experts were eager to share their ideas and reasoning for this growth and success.

Arthur Kupperman, an entrepreneur, says that older entrepreneurs are by no means too old to give up on the creativity and hard work in starting a new venture. “I had to become an entrepreneur myself at age 62 as a result of having to close a business due to the nationwide financial issues in 2008,” Kupperman explains. “The prospects for a job were somewhere between slim and none. I used the situation to think through what could be a meaningful, educational, and beneficial and had to learn new skills. The result is that today I operate a successful web portal targeted to the 55+ demographic and feel it has been among the most enjoyable and rewarding ventures I have ever done.”Kupperman says that is wonderful to start a new venture and watch it mature from concept to reality. “The older generations may have less pressure to prove themselves, less responsibility in both familial and financial and therefore a clearer mind to think through the multitude of issues that confront an entrepreneur,” he says. “An it is a rewarding challenge to learn new technology and marketing skills.”

Vanders Young, an advertising and marketing consultant, says that the job market is fierce and competition for few jobs

available means that mature age candidates have even less chance of finding a job in the current economic climate. “Unfortunately, the job market is ageist and in the minds of employers and there is a tipping point from being seen as experienced to old/will be retiring soon,” she says. “Ridiculous as it is to consign these people with years of experience and knowledge to the too old basket, it is happening. Since retirement is out of the question for those who have seen their savings dwindle away, this is a big problem. So these people are starting their own businesses.”

Thomas Schear, a life and business coach, thinks there is a combination of reasons why many people over 50 are becoming entrepreneurs. “A lot of people over 50 have been laid off from their jobs due to the economy and the idea of going into the work world just isn’t appealing. Second, people over 50 are at a point in their lives where they simply are taking stock, deciding what they want to do with the rest of their lives,” says Schear. “Working at a factory or attending meetings just doesn’t have appeal. Additionally, these folks are looking for a way to rekindle excitement and passion in their life, take a risk, try for something bigger and better, and perhaps a business they can call their own.”

Facebook and Instagram merge

By Maureen Aylward

We asked our Zintro experts to help us understand why Facebook purchased Instagram and to outline the benefits and challenges ahead.

Dave McGary, an internet marketing and social media expert, says that Facebook bought Instagram for many reasons, but the main two factors are that Pinterest is the fastest growing social media website out there and Instagram’s subscriber list. “Pinterest is a competitor because people prefer to click images and photos over reading text. And with 30 million subscribers to Instagram, Facebook users can use the app and software to integrate into FB,” McGary says. “Also, Instagram has new creative talent that can help with Facebook-only apps and to develop FB search.”

Anson Alexander, an IT administrator and blogger, says that in a world where mobile devices are quickly taking over, Facebook has been lacking in mobile technology. “Instagram provides an already established application that Facebook can combine with its user base of close to 1 billion people. Facebook also wants everyone to use its system, and the social media giant may see Instagram as an increasingly popular competitor to its own mobile service,” explains Alexander.

Alexander says that Instagram provides users additional features in photo editing when uploading photos that the native Facebook mobile photo uploader does not. “The Instagram purchase will provide more functionality, improve the quality of the Facebook mobile development team, and reduce competition for photo sharing on mobile devices,” he says.

More on cutting red meat out of the diet

By Maureen Aylward

Recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health say that eating red meat may shorten a person’s lifespan. It says that cutting back on red meat by one serving a day could lower the risk of dying. We asked our Zintro experts to dig into the study and explain what elements in the study are most important to pay attention to.

David Harvard, an expert in biochemistry and molecular biology, says that such a large number of study subjects (37,698 men and 83,644 women) derived from two separate cohorts allows for the determination of rather precise measurements of risk and the replication of findings. “The distinction between processed and unprocessed red meats, and the evaluation of dietary substitutes for red meat, is improvements over another previously published large cohort study of mortality risk associated with red meat intake,” Harvard says. “There remain however, some important limitations of this study. The composition of both cohorts was predominantly non-Hispanic white professionals and, therefore, the generalizing of these findings to other populations remains unclear.” Harvard questions how great are the risks for Asian or Black populations for example, particularly those that are of lower socioeconomic status. “These populations may not only differ from their Caucasian counterparts by underlying genetic predispositions, but also in the quality of the red meats they can afford to purchase compared with study subjects who self-identify as professionals.”

Harvard says that the authors hypothesized several pathogenic mechanisms to explain their results. “Saturated fat, cholesterol content, iron overload, salt and nitrites added to meats during processing, and the generation of carcinogens during cooking was all discussed as potential mechanisms that contribute to mortality,” Harvard explains. “Not discussed, however, is the high omega-6/omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of today’s agriculturally derived meats due to the current practice of raising farm animals on diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats (e.g. corn). Omega-6 fatty acids are highly pro-inflammatory while the omega-3 analogs are much less so. We know that cancer, cardiovascular disease, and a host of other illnesses have an important inflammatory component to them which can be modified by omega-3 dietary supplementation.”

Harvard points out that it has been calculated that modern western diets have omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratios 10 to 20-fold higher than our Paleolithic ancestors. “We are literally gorging ourselves on pro-inflammatory precursors now known to promote cancer, cardiovascular disease and numerous other progressive diseases,” he says. “While the results of the Harvard study may at first surprise the general public, the risks reported are small and these findings are unlikely to result in significant population dietary changes or a major threat to the beef industry any time soon. We live in a fast paced society that even the best intended among us will tend to fall back to old eating habits because we often need to grab a quick meal on the run without much thought about the long-term consequences.”

Christie Moore, an expert in the vegetarian food industry, says that the most important elements to pay attention to are the physiological results of animal protein consumption. “The sulphur-containing amino acid, homocysteine, promotes tiny clots that initiate arterial damage. Homocysteine is up to 40 times more predictive than cholesterol in cardiovascular risk. It results from normal metabolism of the amino acid methionine, which is abundant in red meat, milk, and dairy products,” Moore explains. “The body takes excess protein out of the blood, converts the soluble protein into collagen fiber, and stores it in the basal membranes of arterial and capillary walls. Storing protein in blood vessel walls hinders the passage of adequate amounts of oxygen, glucose, and other essential nutrients to the cells. Protein deposits in blood sinusoids hinder serum cholesterol from leaving the bloodstream. The liver cells perceive a shortage of cholesterol in the body thus stimulating the production of cholesterol to abnormally high levels.”

Cutting red meat out of the diet: Part 2

By Maureen Aylward

Recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health say that eating red meat may shorten a person’s lifespan. It says that cutting back on red meat by one serving a day could lower the risk of dying. We asked our Zintro experts to dig into the study and explain what elements in the study are most important to pay attention to.

Megan Ware, a registered dietician, says that it’s no surprise that a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that increased red meat consumption is associated with a higher mortality rate. “There have been numerous previous studies linking higher intakes of red meat with an increased risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, and diabetes, in which this study is also in agreement. The new research showed an even higher risk of death with intake of processed red meats such as hot dogs, bacon, and salami,” notes Ware.

Ware points out that it is important to consider that the Harvard study participants who ate more red meat were also more likely to be overweight, smoke, drink alcohol, and less likely to be physically active. These men and women were shown to have an overall higher caloric intake and to consume less whole grains, fruits, vegetables, poultry, and fish. “Researchers that conducted the study have been criticized as confusing correlation with causation, and that the study only demonstrates that those participants who followed an overall unhealthy lifestyle were more likely to have a shorter lifespan,” Ware summarizes.

Red meat consumption in the US has been decreasing for the past 20 years, with the U.S beef cattle herd the smallest it’s been since the 1950s. The decrease in consumption has been linked to growing health concerns among consumers, along with droughts and other factors. Ware shares some facts:

  • Most red meats are generally higher in calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol than leaner proteins such as nuts, fish, chicken, turkey, low fat dairy products, and beans.
  • The results of this study simply give more testimony that substituting leaner proteins for higher fat meats when possible is beneficial for overall health.
  • However, that is not to say that red meats cannot also be considered lean, and integrated into a healthy diet when served in appropriate 3 oz portions.
  • The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests looking for meat cuts that include the words loin or round, trimming off the visible fat before cooking, and choosing ground meats labeled as 95% lean.
  • The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends limiting red meat intake to 18 ounces per week for optimal health and using low fat cooking methods such as grilling, baking, stewing, and braising.

Ray Blumenfeld, a publisher of the magazine Canadian Meat Business, says that many of its U.S. and Canadian industry representatives were quick to refute the study’s claims, saying that the study is flawed and the results have little significance to meat eaters in North America. “We as consumers eat red meat products that are within national and international guidelines and are based on a large and significant body of scientific evidence,” he says. “Red meat continues to be part of a balanced diet and nutrition decisions should be based on the total body of evidence, not on single studies that include weak and inconsistent evidence.”

Blumenfeld states that industry experts say the Harvard study was an observational study, meaning it could not be used to determine cause and effect. “The American Meat Institute Foundation said the study ‘tries to predict the future risk of death from cancer or cardiovascular disease by relying on notoriously unreliable self-reporting about what was eaten and obtuse methods to apply statistical analysis to the data.’”
