Retail auto sales are going up

By Maureen Aylward

Retail auto sales are gaining in a weak economy. We asked our Zintro experts to tell us what is behind the growing sales of autos in the US.

Todd McMyn, an expert in manufacturing and specialized consumer products for the auto industry, says that the reason car sales are rising is because most people have put off buying a car for a long time. “As older cars come in for higher repair costs on transmissions and engine repairs, it becomes a no brainer to consider the economics of lowering re-sale value and car road life left after a major repair,” he says. “If repairs cost are $1,000 to $3,000.00 on a low lease/finance rate, the thinking is that it could turn into six months of driving a new car with no worries of future repairs. Hyundai announced an all-time record April sales of 61,754 units, up 40 percent compared with the same record-breaking period last year. It is offering the most competitive lease/finance rates; hence, the budget conscious consumers are gravitating toward this company instead of others that remain on the high side for price/finance ratios.”

David Goldschmidt, an expert in automotive incentives and marketing, says that US retail auto sales have gained in 2011 and are on track to top 12.5 million units this year. He explains that there are several reasons behind this shift:

  • Pent up demand – Vehicles don’t last forever. As they wear out, cars require more costly maintenance. At some point, it makes more sense to replace with a younger model. While the poor economy may have deferred some of these replacements, repair or replacement decisions cannot be put off indefinitely and therefore many buyers are unable to remain on the sidelines.
  • Good product – There are many new, competitive models available today. Many of these are models with good fuel economy as opposed to thirsty trucks or sports cars. In addition, several come from Ford, GM and Chrysler, which offer competitive products in several segments, stimulating buyers who may have waited for competitive domestic entries.
  • Low interest rates – Historically low interest rates produce relatively affordable monthly payments, the primary budget metric to determine the viability of buying a new car. These low rates reduce the cost of both loans and leases.
  • High used car prices – There has been a shortage of used vehicles, so used car values, especially for small, fuel efficient models, are at a high. When this occurs, the gap between a used car and an inexpensive new model narrows, causing more buyers to choose new, getting the benefit of a warranty, a lower interest rate than a used car, less expensive maintenance, and so on.
  • Marketing and incentivesAuto company marketing and promotion budgets are huge, with automakers battling intensely for market share. Immediately after the Japan earthquake and tsunami, domestic automakers went to battle and achieved significant market share gains while Japanese brand inventories were light and plants were being restarted. Now that supply chains are refilled, Japanese brands have increased incentives to win back lost share. At the same time, the domestic brands have increased their incentives to defend hard-won market share gains earlier in the year.
  • Good selection – When inventory is tight and selection poor, some buyers choose to wait until more cars are available to get the exact color or equipment they desire. With few exceptions, both foreign and domestic manufacturers now sport full selections at dealerships, taking away another reason to hold off on a purchase.
  • Fuel prices – Since January 2009, gas prices have trended up, reaching new highs in early 2011. Since prices are higher now than when consumers purchased their last vehicle, some shoppers are looking to replace their existing vehicle with a new, more fuel efficient model. Even the moderation of prices since earlier this year has benefited sales of SUVs, trucks and other less fuel efficient models.

Video games and education

By Maureen Aylward

With scores of children and adults playing video games, and video game companies rushing into meet the demand, we wanted to know how video games will expand into new markets and change over the next several years. Here’s what our Zintro experts had to say.

Matthew Georghiou, an educational game designer, says that educational games are already revolutionizing learning as we know it. “This quiet revolution has been happening for about a decade now. It’s accelerating quickly because of the ubiquity of tablets and smartphones and that many decision makers grew up playing video games and inherently understand the power of games to motivate and educate. This will likely change education more in the next 10 years than it has in the past  100,” he says.

Many experts believe that all games are educational in one way or another. As game mechanics are analyzed and understood in greater depth, they are being applied to increase the effectiveness of learning. “As a result, gamification will be a fundamental aspect of all learning in the future. We won’t think of educational games as a separate product segment, but instead, game mechanics will be a foundational element of most learning experiences,” Georghiou says.

David Katzner, a creative consultant, says that many of the first computer-based games were educational. “I served on the advisory panel at Electronic Arts for their first titles, which were all educational and came under the E*A Kids brand. Most developers who are targeting elementary school children understand that in order to hook Mom and Dad to pony up the cash for a game, there is going to have to be some educational content incorporated into the experience. It might be logic-based thinking, deductive reasoning, or more traditional educational disciplines,” he says.

Richard Seale – “It was rewarding to know that my expertise was useful to someone”

Richard Seale is an expert in machinery design and a consultant, inventor, and entrepreneur.  He has extensive experience in photo bio-reactor design and testing, energetic materials development, especially the formulation and vacuum casting. So it was no surprise that he responded to an inquiry looking for experts on the vacuum pump market.

“It was for a phone consultation, and the potential client was trying to understand the vacuum pump environment, perhaps with related blowers and compressors,” says Seale. “The client was seeking to identify the key manufacturers and any trends or forces within various companies or competitive pressures and regulatory hurdles that could be reasons for these companies to want or need to sell.”

Seale responded with a proposal that was accepted. “It was rewarding to know that my expertise was useful to someone,” he says. “I will continue to follow several other solicitations that I have received through Zintro.”

Is Groupon a deal?

By Maureen Aylward

We asked our Zintro experts about Groupon and if the online couponer is good for business, and what is making its business model work.

Eric Lituchy, an expert in digital marketing, ecommerce, and direct marketing, says that Groupon and its competitors have shown they can drive new customers to a business. “The question is can they drive new business that converts in to loyal customers, and I think that is were these sites all fall short,” he says. “Acquisition marketing is meant to drive new customers to a business, but without retention marketing these programs regularly fail. You can argue that it is the merchant’s responsibility to perform these duties, which could be as simple as an email marketing program, but most of the merchants using Groupon simply are not good marketers.”

Lituchy says he would like to see the deal sites take the model to the next level and offer retention marketing services. “It’s a natural progression of the model and would bring incremental income. It would provide the merchants with the chance to hit a bunch of singles, rather than relying on a grand slam,” he says. “The model works, but the current method needs to mature. Deals must be more targeted and need to be hyper-local. How many times is one person going buy a massage because it is half price? How many restaurants will I try that are outside my neighboring towns, and more importantly, how many will I go to a second time?”

Rick Isenberg, ecommerce and catalog / direct mail marketing consultant, says that the offer you give to the consumer, the split you get with the couponer and your margins is what is good for business. “Many articles have been written about businesses that saw a huge influx of customers that cost them money as they lost money on each sale and didn’t come back a second time,” he says. “Online couponers, such as Groupon, should be looked at like any other customer acquisition vehicle: create a P&L and do a forecast as to the expected purchase rate, usage, and then repurchase (without a coupon). The offer should be limited in scope so that the business gets enough purchases of the offer to see how things work, and then run the numbers after redemption to see how many customers come again without a discount. It all comes down to analyzing the profitability of a customer, including acquisition cost. If the cost is too high, the customer never is profitable”

Jason Taylor, an expert in merchant accounts and online payment, says that the concept of coupons and deals of the day have been around for decades. “Groupon is the latest version of a loss leader marketing for businesses to attract new customers. The technology is great; however, the costs to the business owners are rather high. As more and more competitors enter this space, we can expect the price to business to be commoditized. This will be followed by a quick consolidation in the industry,” he says.

Taylor says that the quickness of Groupon’s IPO should be a concern. “Without time for the market to mature, any shareholder will have to take financials and projections with a grain of salt. There are few ways for coupon companies to accurately project growth and earnings in this emerging market. I would expect very high P/E ratio with zero dividend and a short play on the stock. The light at the end of the tunnel for Groupon is that it is still in a decent position for takeover by a major player looking to integrate the technology,” he says.

Dinesh Seksaria – “I was able to meet her need for information…”

As a consultant to vehicle manufacturers and tier suppliers, Dinesh Seksaria brings more than 40 years experience in sub-systems for automotive, military, and industrial vehicle markets. He is an expert in load carrying part system development, testing and failure analysis, and material selection and application. It’s this expertise that connected him to a successful client consultation recently through the Zintro system.

The inquiry was from a market researcher who was looking for information on behalf of her client, a raw material supplier in the process of developing new bonding technologies for the design and manufacturing of vehicles and trucks. The inquiry was very specific about the expertise needed, so specific that it fit Sekaria’s experience perfectly.

“The client wanted to learn about the use of adhesives in the design of vehicle structures, particularly automotive structures. With my experience, I was able to help her understand where and how adhesives are currently used in specific structures and what limits their use. I helped her to understand the current status of adhesive uses and my belief on the limits of current technology as well as economic, legal, and organizational constraints,” explains Seksaria. “I was able to meet her need for information not only for automotive structures but also for commercial, industrial, and farm vehicle structures. By reaching out and using the Zintro platform, and thereby consulting with me, she seems well positioned to address the needs of her client.”

Seth Cohen is the founder and managing partner of Eleven Canterbury, a firm that provides a collaborative platform for senior financial services executives who wish to leverage their experience to benefit financial institutions and innovative technology companies. Cohen uses the Zintro platform to seek out experienced senior financial services executives. “Our typical profile of an advisor is a retired, well-networked, industry-respected C-level executive who has been the sponsor or decision maker on multiple institutional technology purchases,” says Cohen.

Cohen uses Zintro in a few different ways: to seek out on-demand input from experts when considering business strategy questions and in the recruitment of experts who are interested in consulting opportunities. “We recruit people on Zintro to supplement our current consultants’ collective expertise,” says Cohen. “The response rate is excellent. Self-service check out is checking out

By Maureen Aylward

Supermarkets in the US are abandoning the self-service checkout lines, which were once heralded as the future of grocery shopping. We tapped our Zintro experts to tell us what is behind this decision and what technology will take its place, if any.

Ray England, a supermarket industry executive, believes that before one can determine the reasons behind supermarket retailer’s shift away from self checkout systems and what might replace these systems, one first has to understand the motives behind the installation of self checkout registers in the first place. England poses these questions:

  • Did retailers choose to install self checkouts in their stores to enhance customer service, speed up the checkout process, or offer more choices to their consumers?
  • Did retailers do so in response to overwhelming consumer requests for self checkout or was the decision to install self check out registers driven by a effort to cut front end labor costs?
  • Did the retailers develop a strategy for promoting the installation to the consumer to enhance brand equity in the marketplace or was brand equity and the impact of self checkout on the brand even considered? If so, what is the measure for success?
  • If one operates a supermarket format with a brand equity that revolves around customer service, product selection, and so on, how is self checkout promoted?
  • If one operates a format with a brand equity that revolves around low price, is there a different consumer communication to promote self checkout?
  • Is there an incentive for consumers that choose self checkout?

“Of course, none of these questions even touch on the consumer perspective, which may have determined just how comfortable the average consumer is with weighing produce, entering PLU numbers, and managing coupons in a self checkout scenario. It seems that where self checkout is concerned, there are too many questions and not enough answers,” England says.

Chris Burns, an expert in retail operations and strategy, says that ten years ago self-service checkouts were heralded as the future, and indeed over that period we have seen their appearance across the world, especially in supermarkets and big box outlets. “The introduction was supposed to improve customer service by speeding up transactions, thereby reducing queues in store for customers with a minimum number of items for processing,” he says. “But ten years on we are seeing a reversal and the return to cashier terminals. So what is causing this change? First, people actually like talking with someone at the checkout who can answer questions. Second, it was found that self scanning causes increased pressure on some people that leads to confusion over payments, accidental theft, and actual theft that ended up in the introduction of staff to oversee the self scanning terminals. Problems also occur when age verification is required for purchases of alcohol or discount coupons.”

Burns predicts that over the next few years new bar codes will require the upgrade of scanning systems that may further reduce the number of self scanning options. “The other big change that retailers are trying to grapple with are the use of smartphones that allow customers to scan items and automatically charge accounts,” says Burns. “The key requirement with this method will be some form of electronic validation system in the basket or before leaving the store.”
